South Asia desperate for positives from COP27
South Asia faces severe climate change impacts, with nations incurring significant costs and experiencing frequent extreme weather events. The World Bank estimates substantial financial burdens and climate migration in the region. COP27 is seen as a critical platform for addressing these challenges, with a focus on scaling up adaptation solutions and mobilizing climate finance. Experts highlight the need for equitable climate justice and adequate financial compensation for vulnerable countries. The concept of Loss and Damage is gaining attention, emphasizing the need for additional funds to support affected populations. The success of COP27 hinges on addressing these urgent issues.
Do Bangladeshi Hindus feel safe?
In Bangladesh, the Hindu community, particularly in the city of Cumilla, faces apprehension during the Durga Puja festival following last year's violent attacks by Muslims. Anil Krishna Pal, a craftsman of religious idols, and Ratna Das, a local resident, recount the destruction and fear experienced. Despite increased security measures promised by the government and police, there is a lingering fear of recurrence. The Awami League is perceived as failing to protect the Hindu minority, and calls for more proactive measures, including a minority protection law, are being made.

Shahjahan, a Rana Plaza incident survivor lives a life of agony and trauma.
Three years on, victims still suffer trauma, depression and anxiety
The article discusses the long-term physical and mental health issues faced by survivors of the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh, which occurred on April 24, 2013. Yanur Akter Popi, a survivor, is highlighted as she struggles with paralysis, trauma, depression, and the responsibility of caring for her siblings after the tragedy that killed her mother. Despite receiving some physical treatment from the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed and financial support from the government, mental health support is insufficient. Studies by Dr. Faruk Alam of the National Institute of Mental Health and Professor Jhunu Shamsun Nahar indicate high rates of mental disorders among survivors. NGOs like Caritas provide some counseling, but funding is limited and not sustainable. The article emphasizes the need for more comprehensive mental health support for the victims and criticizes the lack of national attention to mental health in Bangladesh.
