A Korean Peace Treaty Would Be an Unforced Blunder

27 Jul 2023  |  Foreign Policy
Marking the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, the article argues against an end-of-war declaration with North Korea, citing the unreliability of the Kim regime and the potential security risks for South Korea and the region. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining U.S. military presence in South Korea and criticizes unilateral concessions, advocating for a peace treaty only under strict conditions, including North Korea's denuclearization and cessation of illicit activities. The author reflects on South Korea's transformation and the enduring strength of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.
