Buddhist monks are leading the opposition to the new sex education curriculum

17 Jun 2020  |  www.thetimes.co.uk
In Burma, also known as Myanmar, a heated controversy has arisen over the proposed updates to the sex education curriculum. The new curriculum includes topics such as gay sex and sex workers, which has sparked outrage among the country's Buddhist monks and nationalists. The monks, who are traditionally seen as moral guides in Burmese society, are leading the opposition to the changes. The situation escalated when a young doctor, Kyaw Win Thant, publicly criticized the monks by alleging they engaged in watching pornography and visiting prostitutes. His comments, which were shared on Facebook and later deleted, led to a public outcry and a dangerous situation where he was forced to apologize to avoid violence from an angry mob. Despite the opposition from conservative groups, women's organizations and the youth are in favor of the updated sex education curriculum.

Markets in central Yangon were bustling today for the first time in 45 days after the government loosened coronavirus containment measures. In this photo, that mall was named Yuzana Plaza which is one of the biggest and crowded malls in Yangon.

Coronavirus update: Father tows son in boat to Rakhine hospital

22 May 2020  |  Myanmar Mix
A Rakhine man, known as case 190, who tested positive for Covid-19, was forced to travel to the hospital by river due to local authorities blocking road access. The 25-year-old returned from Malaysia and tested positive, becoming the second confirmed case in Rakhine. He was taken to the 100-bed Taunggok Hospital, which lacks proper equipment and staff to handle the situation, as highlighted by doctor Kyaw Bo Win on Facebook. Myanmar has reported 193 cases, six deaths, and 104 recoveries, with the majority of cases in Yangon.
