Eleme oil spill: MOSOP berates Shell, Nigerian govt
The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has criticized the Federal Government for not imposing strict penalties on Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for oil spills. MOSOP President Fegalo Nsuke has called for the evacuation of Eleme communities due to a recent spill from a Shell facility. Nsuke accuses Shell of operating facilities in Ogoniland secretly and not decommissioning them, contrary to UNEP recommendations and government claims. He emphasizes the lack of accountability for environmental polluters in Nigeria. Shell spokesperson Michael Akande acknowledged the spill and stated that the company is collaborating with NOSDRA, the Rivers Ministry of Environment, and community representatives to investigate the incident.

The vacancies are distributed across various regions, with no openings for the North-East. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has called on legal blocs and the judiciary to nominate candidates for these positions. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), under the leadership of President Yakubu Maikyau, has been specifically requested to nominate qualified candidates. Maikyau has circulated a memo to lawyers, who have until June 21 to express their interest at the NBA secretariat in Abuja.
Rivers: Police arrest woman for stabbing 12-year-old girl
A woman named Abigail was arrested by the Rivers State Police Command for stabbing a 12-year-old girl named Oluebube in Rumuodara, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The incident occurred when Oluebube accidentally collided with Abigail while washing plates, causing both to fall. Despite neighbors' pleas that it was a mistake, Abigail ordered Oluebube to sweep the spilled water and subsequently stabbed her with a knife, which broke and remained lodged in the girl's body. The police were alerted, and although Abigail attempted to flee, she was apprehended. The Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-koko, confirmed that the knife was removed from the victim's body and that Abigail would face prosecution.
US bans Ugandan officials after anti-LGBTQI law
The United States Government has announced visa restrictions on Ugandan officials due to human rights abuses and corruption. These measures are being implemented by the Department of State under the Immigration and Nationality Act. The sanctions are a response to the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 in Uganda, which imposes severe penalties on LGBTQI+ individuals. The U.S. has updated its travel advisories and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting human rights and fundamental freedoms in Uganda and around the world.
Former Nigerian Lawmaker and Bank Officials Convicted of N212 Million Fraud
Former Nigerian lawmaker Mansur Ali Mashi and three bank officials were convicted of fraud by Justice Sale Musa Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kaduna. Mashi was found guilty on eight counts of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretenses, involving a N212,439,552 loan from Sterling Bank through fictitious companies. The trial, prosecuted by the EFCC, lasted 12 years and faced delays due to judicial changes. Abdulmumini Mustapha, a former branch manager, and Shehu Aliyu, a former Head of Operations, were also convicted and sentenced. Mashi is also facing a contempt case for allegedly selling confiscated properties. Mustapha is ordered to pay restitution of N40,000,000 to Sterling Bank.
IPMAN Accuses NNPCL of Fraud, Calls for Presidential Intervention
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has accused the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) of engaging in fraudulent activities related to the distribution of petroleum products. During a protest in Apapa, Lagos, IPMAN's Secretary, Folalu Ebenezer, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the exploitation and racketeering allegedly perpetrated by NNPCL officials. Ebenezer highlighted issues with the Authority To Pay (ATP) system, where payments made by IPMAN members for product loading have not resulted in access to the petroleum products, with some tickets pending for up to nine months. He also mentioned a recent price increase and additional charges imposed on tickets without the delivery of products, accusing NNPCL of diverting products to private entities.
Rivers NSCDC Commandant fired over row with tanker drivers
The Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Audi, has removed the Rivers State Commandant, Micheal Ogar, following a protest by the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of NUPENG. The PTD members had barricaded a road in Port Harcourt with tankers, disrupting operations and traffic, in response to the NSCDC's refusal to release their tankers and products seized in August 2022. They accused the Rivers Command of selling the seized petrol. A statement by the Corps Director of Public Relations, Olusola Odumosu, confirmed Ogar's removal and announced the formation of a committee to investigate the incident. Audi emphasized that any indiscipline, compromise, or sabotage would not be tolerated.
World Bank Criticizes Trillions in Harmful Subsidies, Urges Climate Change Spending
The World Bank's report 'Detox Development: Repurposing Environmentally Harmful Subsidies' criticizes the trillions of dollars spent by governments on subsidies for agriculture, fishing, and fossil fuels, which could have been better used to combat climate change. The report highlights that these subsidies, amounting to $1.25 trillion annually, contribute to pollution, health issues, and economic inefficiencies. It suggests that repurposing these funds towards greener initiatives could address many environmental challenges. The World Bank's Senior Managing Director, Axel van Trotsenburg, and Chief Economist of the Sustainable Development Practice Group, Richard Damania, emphasize the need for subsidy reform and the potential benefits of redirecting these funds to improve quality of life and ensure a sustainable future.
