Namibia Opposes Russian Uranium Mining Proposal

24 Jan 2023  |  thepanafrikanist.com
The Namibian government, through the Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform Calle Schlettwein, has opposed a Russian uranium mining proposal by Rosatom's subsidiary One Uranium due to environmental concerns. The proposed in-situ leaching method, which involves pumping sulphuric acid into aquifers, has raised fears of groundwater contamination in the Stampriet Transboundary Aquifer System. Despite potential economic benefits, such as job creation, stakeholders including retired geologist Dr. Roy Miller and environmentalist Herbert Jauch have voiced strong opposition, citing the irreversible risks of water pollution. The government has withheld water permits necessary for the project, and the Cabinet's decision on the matter is pending.
