The initiative has also improved sanitation and livestock care, significantly enhancing the community's quality of life.
Bilharzia campaign targets hotspots
In Nyanga, Manicaland province, a mass drug administration program is underway targeting children aged 1 to 14 years to combat bilharzia and soil-transmitted helminths. The campaign aims to address high prevalence rates in 23 wards, driven by weather and sanitation issues. District medical officer Majoni Muungani and pharmacist Nyasha Mudzongo highlighted the use of albendazole and praziquantel, noting mild side effects. Bilharzia remains a significant health challenge in Zimbabwe, contributing to hospital admissions.

Harare mayor’s basketball tourney targets US$60K for charity
The Harare Mayor International Basketball Challenge aims to raise US$60,000 for underprivileged community members and combat drug use among youth. Scheduled for October 18-20 at the City Sports Centre, the event will feature 16 teams from Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, marking its return after a seven-year hiatus. The tournament, which previously attracted teams from countries like Tanzania and South Africa, will also serve as preparation for the Basketball Africa League qualifications. Local clubs such as UZ Sparks and Mbare Bulls are expected to participate, with preparations already underway.
Drought: Govt targets 9,6m plots for Pfumvudza
The Zimbabwean government aims to support 9.5 million plots under the Pfumvudza programme to enhance food security and mitigate climate change effects. The initiative has seen a 29.5% increase in uptake, with 2.3 million plots ready for the 2024/25 season. Despite its potential to boost food security, there are concerns about the looting of farm inputs by government and Zanu PF officials. The programme is crucial for empowering smallholder farmers and ensuring food self-sufficiency amid recurrent droughts and erratic rainfall patterns.

Caledonia Mining Corporation plc is selling its Zimbabwean subsidiary, Caledonia Mining Services, which operates a 12.2 MW solar project, to CrossBoundary Energy Holdings for $22.35 million. A World Bank Group report highlights the severe impact of climate change on Zimbabwe's agriculture, water, forestry, and energy sectors, with a particular focus on the high risk of groundwater drought. The report warns that without adaptation measures, the percentage of the population at very high risk of groundwater drought could rise significantly. Climate change is also affecting energy demand and forest ecosystems, increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires. Zimbabwe is currently experiencing its worst drought in years, leaving over five million citizens in need of urgent food aid.
Cottco pays US$19,3m to farmers
The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco) has paid US$19.3 million to farmers, with US$4.3 million still outstanding. The company has also settled ZWL$5.4 billion of its ZWL$28.8 billion local currency debt. Despite these payments, the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union, led by Shadreck Makombe, expressed dissatisfaction with Cottco's management and urged for timely payments to support the current planting season. Cotton, a key agricultural export for Zimbabwe, has faced challenges such as drought, climate change, and payment delays, leading to a decline in production. However, cotton output increased by 67% in the 2022/23 season.
Harare water: Government provides ZWL$9 billion for chemicals
The Zimbabwean government has released ZWL$9 billion to the Harare City Council for a month's supply of water treatment chemicals, fulfilling its promise to assist with the city's water purification needs. Despite the funding, the amount falls short of the US$1.5 million required monthly. Harare faces severe water shortages, leading residents to use potentially unsafe water sources and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. The government has also committed to drilling more boreholes to mitigate the water crisis, exacerbated by the destruction of wetlands.
