Conservationists Launch Petition to Save Presidential Elephants
Conservationists in Zimbabwe have initiated a petition to protect the Presidential Herd of Elephants in Hwange Game Park from the threat posed by land occupation in the Kanondo conservation area. The herd was granted protection by a presidential decree from President Robert Mugabe in 1990, reaffirmed in 2001, to safeguard them from hunting and culling. The petition targets Ministers Douglas Mombeshora (Lands and Rural Resettlement) and Walter Mzembi (Tourism and Hospitality Industry), alleging that Elisabeth Freeman (aka Elizabeth Pasalk) has restricted access to the area, endangering the elephants. While Minister Mzembi acknowledged the petition, he deemed it a political issue for the Politburo. Minister Mombeshora claimed ignorance of the petition, and Minister Saviour Kasukuwere (Environment, Water and Climate) stated his office could not intervene in land matters. The Zanu PF Politburo recently decided to remove individuals allocated land in the Save Valley Conservancy, prompting conservationists to request a similar action for the Kanondo area.
