Factors associated with the healthcare expenditures of patients with multiple sclerosis in urban areas of China estimated by a generalized estimating equation

27 Aug 2024  |  Taylor & Francis
The study investigates the healthcare expenditures and out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 77 urban cities in China from 2013 to 2015. Using a generalized estimating equation model, it identifies factors influencing direct medical costs and OOP expenses for both inpatients and outpatients. Key findings include the mean costs per inpatient and outpatient, the percentage of expenses paid OOP, and factors such as tertiary hospital admission, length of stay, and regional residence contributing to higher costs. Females and outpatients with resident insurance were found to pay more OOP.

Assessing effectiveness of heart rate variability biofeedback to mitigate mental health symptoms: a pilot study

01 Oct 2023  |  Frontiers
The study evaluates the effectiveness of a heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) protocol in mitigating mental health symptoms among frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducted at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, the study involved 21 female HCWs and utilized both psychometric questionnaires and electrophysiological measurements to assess stress, anxiety, and depression levels before and after the intervention. Results indicated significant improvements in mental health, with reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. The study supports the use of a multiparametric chronic stress model based on electrophysiological variables as a reliable tool for assessing the effectiveness of mental health interventions. Further research is suggested to confirm these findings and explore the use of wearable devices for real-time monitoring.

Information Acquisition Ability and Farmers’ Herd Behavior in Rice–Crayfish Coculture System Adoption

27 Sep 2023  |  MDPI
Rice–crayfish coculture systems (RCSs) in China have been promoted as an efficient agricultural model that improves rice quality and farmers' incomes. This study examines the herd behavior of farmers in adopting RCSs, using data from 603 farmers and a bivariate probit model. Findings indicate that the number of prior adopters significantly influences farmers' likelihood of adopting RCSs, often leading to blind adoption. Information acquisition ability can significantly inhibit this herd behavior. The study also reveals that herd behavior in RCS adoption is not economically rational, as herding adopters show lower satisfaction and net income per hectare compared to non-herding adopters. Policy recommendations include improving farmers' information acquisition capabilities and regulating the expansion of RCSs to ensure sustainable agricultural development.

Performance Analysis of the Coherent FMCW Photonic Radar System Under the Influence of Solar Noise

20 Mar 2023  |  frontiersin.org
The study presents a coherent frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) photonic radar system designed to determine the range information of a stationary target under various atmospheric conditions and solar background noise.
