Bullfighting now cultural heritage in Caldas

01 Dec 2012  |  El Tiempo
Bullfighting in Caldas has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Caldas Departmental Assembly, with a vote of 9 in favor and 5 against. The ordinance, backed by Governor Guido Echeverri Piedrahíta, has sparked controversy among animal rights defenders and those questioning the legality of the decision. Councilman John Hemayr Yepes expressed concern that the government might now have to promote these activities. Deputy Diego Cardona Arango defended the project, highlighting its cultural significance and economic benefits, including contributions to the health sector. Animal rights advocates are calling for a review of Law 916 of 2004, which regulates bullfighting and imposes restrictions. For the upcoming bullfighting season in Manizales, 3,500 of 4,000 season tickets have already been sold.
