Shots from the border, the journey of the photographer from Cascina Jacopo Papucci between Poland and Ukraine

29 Mar 2022  |  gonews.it
Freelance photographer Jacopo Papucci from Cascina has returned from the Polish-Ukrainian border where he documented the refugee situation in Medyka, a village overwhelmed by fleeing Ukrainians. Accompanied by Sara Russo, who handled the written aspect, Papucci's five-day journey involved visiting a repurposed supermarket and an abandoned factory serving as refugee centers. He captured stories of volunteers, locals like Jan, whose life was upended by the sudden influx of refugees, and moments like a Red Cross volunteer offering tea to a man from bomb-ravaged Mariupol. Children's drawings in a school depicted the war's trauma, and pianist Davide Martelli played music for refugees. Papucci plans to return to continue documenting the crisis through photography.
