Two South Sudan Aid Groups Suspend Operations After Workers Killed
Two aid groups, Plan International and Nile Hope, have suspended operations in eastern South Sudan after gunmen killed two of their workers. The suspensions exacerbate the plight of thousands displaced by flooding in Jonglei state. Annette Hearns from UNOCHA condemned the violence, emphasizing its impact on aid delivery and the suffering of the victims' families. Gatwech Peter Kulang from South Sudan's humanitarian affairs ministry warned that halting operations puts vulnerable lives at greater risk. Both officials called for an end to violence to ensure the safety of aid workers and the continuation of humanitarian services.
African Union Official: South Sudan Must Do More to Protect Women From Violence
An African Union special envoy urges South Sudan's leaders to enact and enforce laws to end sexual violence, emphasizing the involvement of men in these initiatives. The AU's plan includes eliminating all forms of violence, with a call for civil society to advocate for protective legal frameworks. The article highlights recent incidents of sexual violence in Jonglei state and the need for community policing and accountability. The United Nations has expressed concern over the high levels of sexual violence in South Sudan.
Two of Three Children in South Sudan Face ‘Desperate’ Humanitarian Crisis: UNICEF
UNICEF reports that 4.5 million children in South Sudan are facing a severe humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by conflict, flooding, droughts, and economic challenges. Despite a recent peace agreement, the situation has not improved, and UNICEF urgently requires $180 million to support the most vulnerable children. The organization highlights that 8.3 million people in South Sudan need humanitarian aid, a figure surpassing the needs during the 2013-2018 civil war.
South Sudan's Health Care Remains Inadequate, Officials Say
South Sudan's health care system remains severely inadequate as the country marks 10 years of independence. Health officials attribute the shortfalls to insufficient government funding, which has led to deteriorating conditions and demoralized health workers. Violence and instability further hinder health care delivery, with attacks on medical workers and facilities on the rise. Access to care is limited, with many people traveling long distances to reach medical practitioners. The high personal costs for treatment and drugs exacerbate the situation, leaving many unable to afford necessary care. Humanitarian organizations play a critical role in providing support, but the overall health infrastructure remains fragile.
South Sudan Flash Flooding Displaces Thousands
Torrential rains since Sunday have caused flash floods in Ayod County, Fangak state, displacing thousands and submerging shelters, water sources, and crops. Over 4,000 households are affected, with local officials and residents pleading for humanitarian aid. The floods have resulted in loss of property, livestock, and have left many without shelter or food. Aid assessments have been suspended until water levels recede.
South Sudan's New Government Likely Won't Be Formed by Deadline
South Sudan faces delays in forming a transitional unity government due to challenges in setting up and training a unified army. The National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC) and SPLM-IO officials highlight the lack of funds and the need for security arrangements as major obstacles. The pre-transitional period ends in two months, with a government formation deadline of May 12. Issues such as the number of states and their boundaries also remain unresolved. The SPLM-IO distrusts the government's ability to conduct a credible referendum on these matters.
South Sudan Rebels Say They Are Investigating Sexual Abuse Accusations
A South Sudanese rebel group, the SPLA-IO, is investigating accusations of rape and sexual violence against civilians as reported by the U.N. human rights office. The U.N. report, which also implicates government forces, suggests the number of victims in South Sudan's Unity Region is likely higher than the 175 reported cases. Both the SPLA-IO and the South Sudan People’s Defense Force have responded, with the former committing to accountability and the latter dismissing the report as false. The U.N. notes a lack of progress towards accountability, and the African Union Commission has recommended a hybrid court, which has been stalled by the government.
Oxfam: Forced Marriages Aren't Going Away in South Sudan
A report by Oxfam highlights the persistent issue of forced marriages in South Sudan, emphasizing the detrimental effects on girls' education, health, and safety. The report, based on research in Nyal, reveals that over 70% of girls are married before 18, driven by poverty and hunger exacerbated by civil war. Personal testimonies, like that of Helen Poni, illustrate the severe consequences of child marriage. The report calls for increased advocacy, community-led initiatives, and stronger government action to combat gender-based violence and promote girls' education.
UNICEF Asks for $180 Million to Feed South Sudanese
The United Nations children's agency, UNICEF, is appealing for $180 million to address the humanitarian needs of over 800,000 women and children in South Sudan. Despite a peace deal signed in September 2018, over 4.4 million children still require assistance. Andrea Suley, acting UNICEF representative in South Sudan, highlighted the urgent need for funding, particularly for nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. The ongoing conflict and insecurity, especially in regions like Equatoria and Bagari, continue to hinder humanitarian efforts. UNICEF's appeal follows a broader call for global action to protect children in conflict zones.
South Sudan - Central African Republic - Nigeria - Ghana
Cardinal Peter Turkson from Ghana visited South Sudan to promote peace in the wake of recent violent conflicts. During his visit, he met with various stakeholders, including religious leaders, government officials, and internally displaced people. In an interview with RFI's Juba correspondent Onen Walter Solomon, Turkson discussed the complexities of nation-building and the importance of sending the right message to avoid further sectarian unrest, particularly in the Central African Republic. He also addressed the role of religion in peace efforts in Nigeria, emphasizing that Boko Haram's actions are not solely religious but also political and social. Turkson highlighted Ghana's peaceful coexistence despite ethnic diversity, attributing it to the country's ability to negotiate and compromise. He left South Sudan with a message of hope, urging patience and respect for human dignity in the nation-building process.
