Kashmir's popular winter destinations are seeing a surge in tourists, but what they leave behind is wreaking havoc on the environment and local ecology. In Gulmarg, a ski destination, over 2,000kg of litter is collected every day from hotels, motels and vendors. In the evenings, authorities burn the waste near the ski resort, polluting the pristine air. The garbage is also attracting wild animals like monkeys and pests. Over three million tourists, including 43,000 foreigners, visited the disputed Himalayan Territory last year.
For papier-mâché artisans in Indian-administered Kashmir, exporting Christmas ornaments and other festive items is a major source of income. But demand has declined in the last couple of years due to wars in Europe and the Middle East.
