Fake Communal Quote Attributed To Khaleda Zia Goes Viral
A fake quote attributed to Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been circulating on social media, suggesting she asked Hindus and Buddhists to convert to Islam or leave Bangladesh. The quote was shared by a now-defunct website Khabar24X7.com. BOOM fact-checked the claim by searching for credible news reports and speaking to Sayrul Kabir Khan from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's press wing, who denied that Zia ever made such a statement. The fake quote has been linked to discussions around India's Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the situation in Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover. BOOM's investigation revealed that the domain khabar24x7.com is no longer active and was last hosted on Wix.com. The article also includes additional reporting from BOOM Bangladesh.
My Walks of Liberation War in India (Part-1)
The article is a translated commentary of Dr. Zafarullah Chowdhury's experiences during the 1971 Independence War of Bangladesh, focusing on his time in India. Dr. Chowdhury, a physician and health activist, co-founded the Bangladesh Field Hospital for war-wounded freedom fighters. The narrative recounts his arrival at Dum Dum airport in Kolkata and his interactions with various representatives of the Bangladesh Government in exile, including Mr. Hossein Ali and Barrister Moudud. Dr. Chowdhury expresses his disappointment with the lack of arrangements for food and accommodation, and his encounters with other Bangladeshis in crisis. He also describes a meeting with Col. Ataul Goni Osmani and the Prime Minister of the Provisional Government, Mr. Tajuddin Ahmed, who inspired him with their dedication to the liberation cause.
The Other Shades of Sheikh Mujib
The article explores the political evolution and ideological shifts of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, focusing on his transition from democratic socialism to Soviet-influenced communism. It delves into the political dynamics within the Awami League, the influence of key figures like Sheikh Moni, and the geopolitical context of the Cold War. The narrative also touches on the significant events leading up to and following the 1975 military coup, including the roles of the US and Indian governments. The analysis highlights the complexities of Mujib's political affiliations and the broader implications for Bangladesh's history.
