50 days without robbery in KK
The city of Kota Kinabalu has experienced 50 days without any reported robberies, attributed to increased police presence and community safety initiatives. MP Datuk Chan Foong Hin and police chief Assistant Commissioner Zaidi Abdullah highlighted the success of walkabouts and operations in reducing crime and deterring stateless children from begging. Chan also emphasized the need for sustainable solutions for stateless children and supported the police with equipment donations.
Sabahans beating deadline to register for PADU
A large number of Sabahans rushed to register for the Central Database Hub (PADU) system on the final day at various counters in Kota Kinabalu. Over 880,000 people in Sabah updated their information. Man found dead in locked house in Semporna
A 47-year-old man, Rony Chan Chau Miau, was found dead in a locked house at Taman Emas, Semporna. The Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene, cut the house lock, and discovered the deceased. Medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene, and the body was handed over to the police for further action.
Borneo Rhythms of Rimba Festival making a return
The Borneo Rhythms of Rimba Festival is set to return in 2024, organized by Future Alam Borneo (FAB) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment. The festival aims to raise environmental awareness and will feature workshops, tree-climbing experiences, and music segments. The event, scheduled for September 21-22 at the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sepilok, Sandakan, expects over 5,000 attendees and will include participation from various environmental experts and agencies. The festival seeks to engage the public, particularly young people, in environmental conservation efforts.
Sabah not officially informed yet about Borneo train project
The Sabah government has not received official communication about a private company's plan from Brunei to implement Borneo's first high-speed train network, which includes Sabah. Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya stated that the state government learned about the project through media reports. The Ministry of Transport Malaysia will conduct a feasibility study for the Trans Borneo train this year. The project, proposed by Trans-Borneo Railways, aims to connect Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak, and Kalimantan over 1,620 kilometers in two phases. Proposals from China and India are also in early stages, while the Sabah State Railway Department focuses on re-establishing the Tanjung Aru-Sembulan to Sepanggar Port route.
Paitan, Sook will become full district
Paitan and Sook will be upgraded to full districts following approval in a recent Cabinet meeting, as announced by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor. The upgrade aims to enhance government services and development in these areas. Hajiji highlighted ongoing and future projects, including a multipurpose hall and road improvements, emphasizing the state government's commitment to Paitan's development. First Dusun translated Quran in world
The Pertubuhan Kadazan Dusun Murut SeMalaysia (KDMRS) has produced the world's first Dusun translated Quran, a project that took four years and involved language experts proficient in ethnic languages and Arabic. The translation team, led by Dr. Joseph@Yusof Gimbad, aims to make the Quran accessible to Dusun speakers and plans to translate it into other ethnic languages such as Kadazan, Murut, Rungus, and Sungai. The project was launched in Kota Kinabalu, with notable attendees including Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun. KDMRS also plans to translate other Islamic texts to strengthen Islamic civilization among ethnic groups in Sabah.
Cloud seeding operation yields 4.0mm of rainfall in Papar
The Cloud Seeding Operation (CSO) in Sabah, led by Mohd Fuad Abdullah, successfully produced 4.0mm of rainfall in Papar, with a 67% success rate. Conducted by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, the operation aimed to increase river water levels in Papar, Lahad Datu, and Tawau. The three-day CSO, ending on Saturday, involved collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency, Malaysian Meteorological Department, and other agencies. Despite the rainfall, the Air Pollutant Index in Kimanis remains at an unhealthy level. Papar was previously declared a drought disaster area due to prolonged drought.
Schools in Sabah ordered not to hold outside activities
State Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin has prohibited schools in Sabah from holding outdoor activities due to hazy weather conditions. Schools are advised to follow Ministry of Education guidelines and refer to Meteorological Department reports and Ministry of Health advice. Schools with high Air Pollution Index levels may close. During a recent event, the State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation provided funding to District Education Offices for STEM programs, aiming to increase student participation in STEM subjects.
Two people found dead inside KK storage room
Two individuals were found unconscious and dead in a carbon dioxide gas cylinder storage room at an abandoned condominium project site in Likas Jaya, Kota Kinabalu. The discovery was made by the Kota Kinabalu fire and rescue team, led by station chief Ordine Gilu, after receiving a distress call. The bodies were handed over to the police for further action.
