US Condemns Rwanda's Alleged Support for M23 Rebels in Eastern Congo
The United States, through spokesperson Matthew Miller of the Department of State, has condemned Rwanda for allegedly supporting M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The US has called for an immediate end to the violence and for M23 to cease hostilities and withdraw from Sake town and Goma. Rwanda denies involvement with M23, which claims to defend Kinyarwanda-speaking communities and accuses the Congolese army of collaborating with the FDLR. The US also warned the DRC against collaboration with the FDLR and emphasized the need for respect of sovereignty and accountability for human rights abuses. The statement was made during a regional leaders' meeting in Addis Ababa aimed at resolving tensions and ending the war in Eastern Congo.
Rwanda: Kagame says Macron recognition of Genocide is risky but valuable
During a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Rwandan President Paul Kagame praised Macron's acknowledgment of France's role in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Macron's visit to the Kigali genocide memorial marked the first time a French president has recognized France's responsibility in the genocide. Macron's speech was seen as more than an apology; it was a truthful admission of past mistakes. Macron also committed to redefining relations between Rwanda and France, bringing a donation of 100,000 Covid-19 vaccines, with more developmental agreements promised.
DRC: Joseph Kabila Has Nothing Else To Offer, It’s Time For Tshisekedi
The political landscape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has shifted with the emergence of a new coalition, 'Union sacrée', which supports President Felix Antoine Tshisekedi and diminishes the influence of his predecessor, Joseph Kabila. Kabila's coalition, the FCC, previously held the majority in government and parliament, often stalling Tshisekedi's initiatives. However, by the end of 2020, Tshisekedi's reforms and political consultations led to a significant number of lawmakers leaving the FCC to join 'Union sacrée'. The resignation of Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba, who was voted out by parliament, and the appointment of Modeste Bahati Lukwebo to identify a new majority in the National Assembly, have further solidified Tshisekedi's position. Political analyst Eloge Mwandwe emphasizes that the changes are aimed at improving the lives of citizens and not targeting individuals. Despite potential opposition, the reforms are seen as a step towards a hopeful future for the DRC.
