Divisions rise to the fore as Greece heads for new vote

04 Apr 2024  |  aa.com.tr
Greece's center-right party, New Democracy, led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, won the parliamentary elections with over 40% of the vote, just shy of a legislative majority. The main opposition, Syriza, suffered a significant loss, securing only 20% of the vote. Despite economic growth and a reduction in unemployment, Mitsotakis' administration faced criticism over a wiretapping scandal and a tragic train accident. The upcoming second-round elections on June 25 will determine if New Democracy can secure a single-party government. Some citizens expressed disillusionment with the current political situation, while others believe Mitsotakis deserves another chance due to positive economic trends.

Greece holds second round of general elections

04 Apr 2024  |  aa.com.tr
Greece opened polling centers for the second time in five weeks to decide the country's leadership for the next four years. Former Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the likely winner according to recent polls and previous election results, did not achieve the necessary majority to form a government in May's elections. The latest polls suggest that the New Democracy Party leads by 21.5 percentage points against the opposition SYRIZA. With the new electoral system, the winning party will receive a bonus of 20 seats if it gets at least 25 percent of the votes and can get up to 50 seats if it gets around 40 percent of the votes. A total of 9,813,595 Greek citizens are registered to vote at 21,634 polling centers across Greece, according to the Ministry of Interior. On Saturday, more than 25,600 Greeks living abroad voted in the second round.

Greece: 3 dead, 12 missing as migrant boat capsizes in Aegean Sea

06 Oct 2023  |  The Muslim News
Three migrants died and twelve are missing after a boat capsized near Mykonos in the Aegean Sea. The Greek Coast Guard is conducting search and rescue operations. Two survivors, a Syrian and a Palestinian, were rescued. Humanitarian groups criticize the Greek government for illegal pushbacks and human rights violations. A video from Lesvos showed migrants being forcefully transported and abandoned at sea, which the Greek government is investigating. Greece was a major entry point during the 2015-16 migration crisis.
