Gambia Launches TRRC To Investigate Past Human Rights Violations
The Gambia has launched the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) to investigate human rights violations and abuses from July 1994 to January 2017 under former President Yahya Jammeh's regime. The commission aims to bring social cohesion, justice, and national reconciliation. Eleven Gambian nationals were sworn in as commissioners, with Dr. Lamin J Sise as Chairman. Key figures, including President Adama Barrow and Attorney General Abubacarr Tambadou, emphasized the importance of the TRRC in rebuilding the nation and ensuring justice. The TRRC is seen as a significant step towards healing and moving forward from the past authoritarian regime.
Justice Minister Tambadou – The Fatu Network
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice of Gambia, Abubacarr Tambadou, emphasized the new government's openness to the press during a workshop on the Gambian Freedom of Information Bill. The event took place at the Kairaba Beach Hotel and was aimed at fostering a relationship where journalists have access to information and practice responsible journalism. Tambadou highlighted the distinction between informing the public and inciting them, placing the responsibility on journalists. The workshop was attended by various stakeholders, including the Minister of Information and Communication Infrastructure, the UN Resident Coordinator, and members of the Gambia Press Union.
Former NIA Director General & Co Case Suffers Setback
The criminal trial of nine former NIA officers, including ex-Director General Yankuba Badjie, faced a delay in the Banjul High Court due to the defense's objection over receiving new charges shortly before the trial. The defense argued for a complete summary of evidence, while the state counsel acknowledged procedural challenges. Justice Kumba Sillah Camara adjourned the case to April 3, 2017, for plea taking. The trial involves multiple legal representatives on both sides, with twelve new charges expected against the accused.
Jammeh’s Kanilai Properties Abandoned
The article by Lamin Sanyang reports on the current state of the abandoned properties of Gambia's exiled former President Jammeh in his native village of Kanilai. The military presence has been removed, and the security guards have been disarmed and redeployed, leaving the property under the watch of local village youths. The property, once heavily guarded and the site of various state-funded projects and events, is also rumored to have been a place where Jammeh disposed of the bodies of his victims. Following a political impasse after Jammeh's defeat in the presidential polls and subsequent exile to Equatorial Guinea, the security situation at his properties has significantly changed, with no official security and only family members and a farm manager, Major Alieu Sowe, overseeing the area.
