Kosovo Probes Killing of Guerrilla Commander and Family
Kosovo's Special Prosecution Office has initiated a preliminary investigation into the 1998 attack by Serbian police special forces on the Jashari family compound in Prekaz, which resulted in the death of guerrilla commander Adem Jashari and 58 relatives. The investigation, launched last year, seeks to gather evidence as no open case was found with EULEX, UNMIK, or the Hague Tribunal. The attack is often seen as the start of the Kosovo war, and Jashari is considered a hero by Kosovo Albanians. A commemorative ceremony and session of the Kosovo Assembly were held to mark the 22nd anniversary.
Investigation launched into poisoning of election commission officials
An investigation has been launched into the potential poisoning of officials at Kosovo's Central Election Commission (CEC) during the verification of postal votes from the October 6 parliamentary election. The process was halted after some officials experienced allergic reactions upon contact with envelopes from Serbia. The incident has sparked accusations from Lista Srpska and Serbia's Office for Kosovo and Metohija, claiming it is an orchestrated effort to manipulate votes. The affected officials are in stable condition, and analysis is ongoing to determine the source of the poisoning. Vetevendosje’s Albin Kurti expressed interest in including other Serb politicians in the government, excluding members of Lista Srpska.
Kosovo Prosecutors Investigate Whether ‘War Rape Photo’ is Fake
Kosovo prosecutors are investigating the authenticity of a photograph shown by MP Flora Brovina, which she claimed depicted Serbian soldiers raping an ethnic Albanian woman during the Kosovo war. The image, which may have originated from the Iraq war, has sparked outrage and condemnation from various political figures and war victims, who argue that its use is unethical and damaging. The controversy has overshadowed discussions on a proposed parliamentary resolution accusing Serbia of genocide.
Kosovo grants asylum to Turkish national
Ugur Toksoy, a Turkish national and teacher in Kosovo, was granted asylum after his extradition to Turkey was halted. Toksoy, accused of ties to the Feto organization led by Fethullah Gulen, claimed political persecution. This decision follows the controversial deportation of six Turkish nationals from Kosovo, leading to political fallout and dismissals within the Kosovo government.
Brother of Kosovo ISIS commander joins ranks of fleeing terrorist suspects
Irfan Haqifi, a high-profile terror suspect in Kosovo, has escaped house arrest, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the country's detention measures. Haqifi, charged with recruiting for ISIS, is the brother of Ridvan Haqifi, a known ISIS leader. The case highlights the challenges Kosovo faces in managing terrorism suspects, with many being released under softer custody measures. The lack of electronic monitoring and internet restrictions has facilitated escapes, as seen in other cases like Bekim Mulolli, who is rumored to have died in Syria. The situation underscores the ongoing threat of terrorism in the region and the need for stricter security protocols.
Mystery Surrounds Serbian Terrorist Vet Case in Kosovo
Slobodan Gavric, a Serbian veterinarian, was sentenced to 13 years in prison on June 29 for planning a terrorist act in Kosovo. His arrest occurred on December 25, 2014, after Kosovo police were tipped off about his intention to enter Kosovo with explosives targeting the Grand Hotel in Pristina. Police found over 12 kilograms of powerful explosives in his vehicle, mixed with shrapnel to maximize damage and casualties, although no detonators were found.
