Women professionals move to halt girl-child school dropouts

06 May 2024  |  www.standardmedia.co.ke
Nyanza women professionals from Amako Women Group and Cardolinda Foundation have initiated a campaign to combat the high rate of girl-child school dropouts in Suna East, particularly in Kwa location. The campaign addresses the issue of early pregnancies among primary school girls, which is attributed to poverty and a lack of community mentors. The initiative provides essential materials and counseling to affected girls, with a recent distribution event for girls from four schools, including Radienya, Rabuor Taya, Opasi, and Kwa Hill primary schools.

MCA attacked by armed gang claims his life is in danger

01 Oct 2023  |  www.standardmedia.co.ke
Jared Osawa, a Member of County Assembly (MCA) from Migori, Kenya, has expressed fears for his life following an attack by an unknown assailant and a series of threatening messages. Osawa, who represents South Sakwa Ward, reported the incident to the Migori County Assembly, stating that he was attacked on his way home after helping accident victims to a hospital. He suspects supporters of the former assembly majority leader, who was ousted through a no-confidence motion, to be behind the threats and attack.

Supremacy battles in different religious sects in Kenya are rampart, this is Legio Maria fighting to control the sect. This was in Migori County

Children leaving with disability in many parts of Kenya are the most unlucky lot, parents either hide them in their homes not to see anyone, or they are abandoned at children homes. Living with disability according to most parents is a curse. I did this story in Migori County, where the kids are abandoned by parents at a children's home.

In some places in Africa, stigmatization against specific diseases and conditions is still high, HIV/Aids, Cancer, Albinism among others are still viewed as curses. This story done in Kiswahili from the Lake Basin region of Homa Bay, is of a girl (sadly she passed on), who was abandoned because she had breast cancer, people viewed as a cursed child.
