Parental Attitudes toward Gifted Students and Gifted Education: Attitude Profiles and Predictors

29 Apr 2024  |  MDPI
The study investigates parental attitudes toward gifted students and gifted education, identifying three distinct attitude profiles: strong, moderate, and weak supporters. Using data from 331 parents in a Christian faith-based school system in Australia, the research highlights nine predictors of these attitudes, including perceptions of a child's giftedness and the socio-emotional and academic impacts of gifted education. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding parental attitudes to develop effective educational programs and support systems for gifted students.

Students, community and belonging: an investigation of student experience across six European countries

09 Apr 2024  |  tandfonline.com
The study investigates student experiences of community and belonging across six European countries, focusing on how students define their university community in relation to institutional status and student diversity. In England and Ireland, students from prestigious universities like Oxbridge and HEI3 are perceived differently due to socio-economic backgrounds, while in Denmark and Germany, the differentiation is based on university ethos and practical orientations. The research also explores the 'within university' community, noting that diverse student populations can enhance personal development and belonging. However, feelings of anonymity and exclusion are common among non-traditional students, such as mature students or those with disabilities. The study concludes that the importance of community varies by country, influenced by residential models of higher education, the marketisation of education, and national traditions, affecting students' sense of belonging.

A Rare-Earth Selenite with Unexpectedly Well-Balanced Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Functionality, Sc(HSeO3)3

04 Apr 2024  |  onlinelibrary.wiley.com
Sc(HSeO3)3, a selenite-based ultraviolet nonlinear optical material, exhibits exceptional UV-NLO properties, including the shortest absorption edge among NLO-active selenites at approximately 214 nm, a wide band gap of 5.28 eV, a large phase-matchable second-harmonic generation response that is five times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), and a significant birefringence of 0.105 at 1064 nm. The research is associated with Sogang University in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and the Fujian Science & Technology Innovation Laboratory for Optoelectronic Information of China in Fuzhou, China.

Gynostemma pentaphyllum Hydrodistillate and Its Major Component Damulin B Promote Hair Growth-Inducing Properties In Vivo and In Vitro via the Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway in Dermal Papilla Cells

28 Mar 2024  |  MDPI
The study investigates the hair growth-promoting properties of Gynostemma pentaphyllum leaf hydrodistillate (GPHD) and its major component, damulin B, both in vitro and in vivo. GPHD and damulin B were found to induce hair growth through the Wnt/β-catenin pathway via AKT signaling, showing similar efficacy to minoxidil. The research highlights the potential of GPHD as a natural alternative to current FDA-approved treatments for alopecia, which often have significant side effects. The findings suggest that GPHD and damulin B could be promising candidates for the prevention and treatment of hair loss.

Comparative Analysis of Biofilm Removal Efficiency and Tooth Wear between Mechanical Electric and Bioelectric Devices

26 Mar 2024  |  www.preprints.org
The study quantitatively compares the plaque-removal efficiency and tooth wear of bioelectric effect (BE) toothbrushes with mechanical electric toothbrushes. An electronic circuit was developed to generate the BE signal, and experiments were conducted using typodonts coated with artificial plaques. The BE toothbrush demonstrated higher plaque-removal efficiency and minimized tooth wear, suggesting its potential as a new solution for oral care.

An Experimental Evaluation of Path-Based Product Line Integration Testing and Test Coverage Metrics

25 Nov 2023  |  MDPI
The study evaluates the effectiveness of path-based product line integration testing and test coverage metrics in software product line testing (SPLT). It highlights the importance of minimizing redundant testing to reduce costs and improve quality. The research defines coverage metrics for path-based integration testing and demonstrates their effectiveness in preventing redundant testing and detecting faults. Experimental results show that the proposed method and metrics can significantly reduce testing costs and improve test coverage, ensuring efficient and effective product line testing.

Longitudinal Analysis of SARS-CoV-2-Specific Cellular and Humoral Immune Responses and Breakthrough Infection following BNT162b2/BNT162b2/BNT162b2 and ChAdOx1/ChAdOx1/BNT162b2 Vaccination: A Prospective Cohort in Naive Healthcare Workers

19 Oct 2023  |  mdpi.com
A prospective cohort study evaluated immune responses and breakthrough infections in 235 infection-naïve healthcare workers up to 13–15 months after initial vaccination with either BNT162b2 or ChAdOx1, followed by a BNT162b2 booster. The study found peak immune responses one to two months after the second or third dose, with gradual declines over six months. The ChAdOx1 group showed a more rapid decline in antibody levels after peak response compared to the BNT162b2 group. Breakthrough infections displayed higher neutralization activities against Omicron variants, suggesting cross-immunity. The study highlights the importance of understanding diverse immune response patterns for optimized vaccination strategies.
