Voodoo magic that cures everything in Haiti
Haitian voodoo leaders have mobilized against COVID-19, claiming to have a secret remedy and preparing sacred chambers in their temples for patients. In Haiti, where Western healthcare is scarce and expensive, many rely on herbal remedies and ritual practices. The country's slow initial virus spread has accelerated, with confirmed cases nearly quintupling to 1,063. Voodoo, practiced by over half of Haiti's 11 million people, has been serving immune-boosting teas. The voodoo community has also devised a potion to alleviate COVID-19 symptoms, inspired by spirits. President Jovenel Moise has endorsed another plant-based 'cure' from Madagascar, reflecting the country's struggle with healthcare and the legacy of slavery. Voodoo, officially recognized as a religion in 2003, is closely tied to Haiti's fight for independence. The pandemic has prompted voodoo practitioners to clarify their role in combating the virus, with a call for harmony with nature.
Fire at unauthorized orphanage in Haiti kills 15 children
Fifteen children perished in a fire at an orphanage run by the U.S. Christian non-profit Church of Bible Understanding in Haiti. Two children died in the fire, while thirteen succumbed to asphyxiation at the hospital. The orphanage was one of many operating without official authorization in Haiti, where poverty and lack of services lead many parents to relinquish their children. The government has been closing unauthorized orphanages and discourages new ones from opening. The incident highlights the dire conditions and risks faced by children in such institutions.
Haiti orphanage fire kills 15, renews debate over unlicensed orphanages
A fire at an unlicensed orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti, operated by the U.S.-based Church of Bible Understanding, resulted in the deaths of 15 children, sparking renewed debate over the prevalence of unlicensed orphanages in the country. The orphanage, which housed around 60 children, lacked a license and was using candles due to a power outage. The incident highlights the broader issue of unlicensed orphanages in Haiti, where only 35 out of 754 are officially authorized. The government has been working to close unauthorized institutions and reunite children with their families. President Jovenel Moise called for an investigation into the cause of the fire. The situation underscores the challenges faced by many Haitian parents who send their children to orphanages due to poverty and lack of access to basic services.
