Ceará uses strategy adopted in Brumadinho to contain oil expansion
Preventive measures are being implemented in Ceará to prevent further oil spill contamination of beaches and rivers. The state government has adopted a containment strategy previously used in Brumadinho, involving barriers with special nets and anchors. Initial installations are taking place at the mouth of the Jaguaribe River in Fortim. The equipment, monitored 24/7, aims to trap oil before it spreads further. If successful, the method will be applied elsewhere in the state. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the state government, local fishermen, and environmental agencies.
Police from Pernambuco, Piauí, and Santa Catarina already reinforce security on the streets of Fortaleza
In response to a series of attacks in Fortaleza and surrounding areas, 19 police officers from Pernambuco have been deployed in Ceará, joining forces with 100 military personnel from the Bahia Shock Battalion and 406 members of the National Force. Security agents from Piauí and Santa Catarina are also contributing to the efforts. The Security and Social Defense Secretariat of Ceará reported that 239 individuals have been arrested for involvement in the crimes since January 2, with 24 arrests made between 9 AM and 6 PM on January 9.
Policing in Messejana is reinforced after threat of attack on hospital
Security forces including the Civil Police, Military Police, and Raio intensified patrols around the Hospital Geral Doutor Waldemar de Alcântara in Messejana following threats of an attack. Residents reported that men on motorcycles ordered local businesses to close, leading to customers and merchants seeking refuge in the hospital. The hospital suspended patient visits as a precaution but denied receiving direct threats. Police presence was requested as a preventive measure and maintained throughout the day, with hospital services continuing as normal.
Out of fear of attacks, merchants close shops in Curió neighborhood
Due to threats of curfews shared via WhatsApp, residents and merchants in the Curió neighborhood of Fortaleza avoided leaving their homes. The ongoing attacks in the Capital, Metropolitan Region, and Interior of the State have reached their seventh day. Few shops were open, and public transport usage was minimal. Merchants chose to close their businesses out of fear of attacks, with some receiving orders to shut down.
Only about 50 buses are circulating on Saturday morning in Fortaleza
In Fortaleza, out of a fleet of 1,810 vehicles, only about 50 buses are operating on the morning of Saturday, January 5th, due to a series of attacks on vehicles, a viaduct, public agencies, bank agencies, and security equipment in the state that began on Wednesday. The reduced fleet is operating with police onboard for security, and the lines are being released based on the availability of security agents. Sindiônibus director of operations, João Luís Marciel, stated that the transportation companies are ready to operate normally as long as security can be ensured.
