Moonlight rescues as migrants paddle from Turkey to Greece
The article reports on the situation in Izmir, Turkey, where refugees from Syria are gathering in hopes of being smuggled across the Aegean Sea to the Greek island of Lesbos. Smugglers are seen loading people onto inflatable boats, often in dangerous conditions, as refugees wait for their turn. The refugees, many of whom have already been displaced within Syria, are paying a fixed price for the risky journey to escape the conflict and seek a better life in Europe. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees' spokeswoman, Melissa Fleming, indicated that Greek islands are receiving over 1,000 migrants daily, with around 30,000 refugees currently there, 20,000 of whom are on Lesbos. Refugees express their desperation and desire for a peaceful life, with some having made multiple failed attempts to reach Greece.
