Gretta Kathia Iradukunda makes green economy and health science rhyme
Ecologist Gretta Kathia Iradukunda is actively working to save Lake Tanganyika from the invasive water hyacinth by transforming the challenge into a business opportunity. She founded Hyacinth Art House, which has been at the forefront of the battle to preserve the environment by limiting the proliferation of the water hyacinth by up to 50%. Iradukunda's project, launched in March 2022, has gained support from incubation centers and international organizations, earning her the AWA award for best young innovator. She has involved low-income women artists in her project, particularly through the SYCABU cooperative, which contributes to the collection, drying, and transformation of the water hyacinth into artisanal products. The initiative has improved the lives of around 500 people, including the families of the artisans.
