Dushanbe's Soviet-era buildings are being demolished to make way for the new Tajikistan
The article discusses the rapid urban development in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where Soviet-era buildings are being replaced with modern structures such as skyscrapers and shopping malls. The city's growth is part of a strategic plan that aims to expand its territory and population by 2030. While some residents welcome the modernization, others are concerned about the loss of historical buildings and the city's Soviet architectural heritage. The article highlights the tension between development and preservation, as well as the changing demographics and cultural identity of Dushanbe since Tajikistan's independence from the Soviet Union. The journalist, Esfandiar Adineh from BBC Persian, provides a detailed account of the city's transformation and the varying perspectives of its inhabitants.
Were the Tajikistan parliamentary elections fair and transparent?
In the recent parliamentary elections in Tajikistan, out of 63 seats in the House of Representatives, 47 were won by representatives from the People's Democratic Party, the ruling party of the country.
What is the reason for the arrest of Tajik journalist Dilir Sharif?
A court in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, has announced that 32-year-old Tajik journalist Dilir Sharif will remain in custody for another two months pending investigation. Sharif, previously reported missing, is accused by authorities of inciting national, local, racial, and religious hatred and enmity. Recently, dozens have been imprisoned in Tajikistan on similar charges. Dariush Rajabian discussed the matter with Tajik journalist Esfandiar Adineh on BBC Persian's morning program.
Tajikistan government prevents foreign media journalists from continuing their work
The Tajikistan government has not renewed the accreditation or work permits for several journalists from foreign media outlets. This issue has been raised in American governing circles, as most of these journalists worked for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty based in Prague. Alice Wells, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, expressed support for the international campaign backing Radio Free Europe journalists. Prior to this, Radio Free Europe's management, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Helsinki Human Rights Commission, the National Congress of America, the National Association of Independent Media of Tajikistan, and the Tajikistan Media Council had urged Tajik authorities not to hinder the professional work of journalists.
