Why are our Ana’s dying?
The article discusses the mysterious die-off of Ana trees in the western regions of Namibia, particularly along the Ugab, Swakop, and Kuiseb rivers. Scientists, including Prof. Nico Smit from the University of the Free State and zoologist Barbara Curtis, have observed a significant decline in these trees, with up to 79% dying in the Swakop River. Various theories are proposed, such as lowered groundwater levels due to dams and boreholes, old age and natural senescence of the trees, severe droughts exacerbated by climate change, and possible infections like fungal diseases. Botanist Coleen Mannheimer suggests a combination of high parasite infestation and drought as potential causes. The situation is alarming as no young trees are growing to replace the dead ones, indicating a serious ecological issue.

Chinese businessman wants to capture Namibian dolphins, killer whales and penguins for Asian aquarium trade
A Chinese businessman has applied to capture live marine mammals from the Namibian coast for the Asian aquarium trade, sparking outrage among marine environmentalists. The species targeted include penguins, bottlenose dolphins, seals, and killer whales. The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources' public relations officer, De Wet Mulauli Siluka, denied knowledge of the application when questioned. The vessel Ryazanovka, equipped with tanks for transporting live marine animals, is anchored at Walvis Bay. Environmentalists are urging the public to prevent the capture of these marine species, emphasizing that many are protected and their capture could exceed their estimated populations in Namibian waters.
