Ethiopian military boosts operations in Amhara region

03 Oct 2024  |  www.voanews.com
The Ethiopian military has intensified operations against Fano rebel groups in the Amhara region, citing the need for forceful measures as peace efforts have failed. Amnesty International has accused the Ethiopian army of mass arbitrary detentions, urging an end to such practices. The conflict has exacerbated humanitarian challenges, with the World Food Program facing significant security risks in delivering aid. Kidnappings have surged, linked to the ongoing political and security crisis, involving various actors with differing motives.

Nine Dead in Renewed Fighting in Ethiopia's Amhara Region

18 Sep 2024  |  allAfrica.com
Renewed fighting in Ethiopia's Amhara region has resulted in at least nine deaths and over 30 injuries, primarily in the towns of Debark and Dabat. The clashes involve government forces and the Fano militia, with reports of heavy artillery exchanges and damage to property. Businesses and government offices in the affected areas remain closed. The conflict, which began over a year ago, stems from government plans to disarm regional paramilitary forces. Efforts to reach government officials for comment have been unsuccessful, and the exact cause of the latest outbreak remains unclear.

Humanitarian, Human Rights Organizations Press for Aid Access in Ethiopia

01 Dec 2021  |  www.voanews.com
The U.N. World Food Program, Human Rights Watch, and other organizations are urging combatants in northern Ethiopia to halt abuses and allow emergency aid delivery to millions of civilians affected by the yearlong conflict. Displaced individuals in the Amhara region report severe hunger and medical needs. The conflict, which began in November 2020 between Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), has spread to neighboring regions, causing significant humanitarian crises. The WFP has faced challenges in delivering aid due to looting and restricted access. Human Rights Watch and other entities are calling for independent investigations into human rights abuses and obstruction of aid.
