About Angelo
Dutch multimedia journalist based in Rome, Italy, since 2001. Graduated from the School of Journalism in Zwolle (The Netherlands) in 1995, I've worked for 5 years for the national public radio in The Netherlands before I moved to Rome. Ever since I'm in Rome I made radio reports (from 3 minute features to 90 minute documentaries), always for Dutch public radio. I always recorded and edited my own stuff. in 2003 I started working for television as well and in 2007 I bought a camera to do my own filming as well. And with the filming came the editing. So now I do all my stuff on my own.

Famous tower in Bologna 'creaks and groans' and threatens to collapse

01 Nov 2023  |  www.parool.nl
The Garisenda Tower in Bologna, over nine hundred years old and standing at 48 meters, is showing signs of distress, with unusual movements detected by sensors. Traffic around the monument has been halted to assess the tower's condition, which leans 4 degrees off plumb. Experts, including Professor Pier Luigi Cervellati of Italia Nostra, suggest making the area car-free to prevent further damage. The city has engaged an engineering firm to stabilize the tower temporarily, the same firm that salvaged the Costa Concordia and was involved in rebuilding the collapsed bridge in Genoa. A technical committee has also been formed for the tower's restoration.

Silvio Berlusconi: from homework seller to media magnate and politician who deeply divided Italy

12 Oct 2023  |  Het Parool
Silvio Berlusconi's career, spanning from a homework seller to a media magnate and a deeply divisive politician, is marked by significant achievements and numerous scandals. Rising to prominence in the 1990s, he capitalized on the political vacuum left by the 'Mani Pulite' scandal, presenting himself as a businessman capable of rescuing Italy from corruption. His media empire, including Mediaset and AC Milan, flourished, but his tenure was marred by allegations of mafia connections, legal battles, and personal scandals. Despite his polarizing impact, Berlusconi's influence on Italian politics and media remains profound, with his legacy characterized more by theatricality than substantial political reforms.

One of the women, Barbara Guerra, plans to legally challenge the decision, citing a promise made by Berlusconi. The heirs aim to distance themselves from the more embarrassing aspects of Berlusconi's life.

The Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith supports these changes, stating there are no canonical reasons to deny these rights. The decision has faced criticism from the conservative wing, particularly in the United States, leading to the dismissal of Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, for his opposition to the Pope's progressive policies.
