Rollout of the 2022/2023 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination and Correlates of the Use of Enhanced Vaccines among Italian Adults

15 Dec 2023  |  mdpi.com
The article discusses a study on the factors influencing the uptake of enhanced quadrivalent influenza vaccines (eQIVs) among older adults in Italy during the 2022/2023 influenza season. It highlights the availability of different types of SIVs and the lack of a preferential recommendation for a specific SIV type in Italy, contrasting with the US guidelines that preferentially recommend eQIVs for older adults. The study found that eQIVs were more frequently administered to older adults with cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and less likely to be administered at pharmacies. The study also emphasizes the importance of general practitioners (GPs) in vaccine administration and the need for continuous medical education for healthcare providers. The article suggests that local health authorities should ensure the availability of appropriate vaccines and that official recommendations should be aligned with the best available evidence to optimize vaccine uptake and effectiveness.

Barcoding Technology in COVID-19 Diagnostics and SARS-CoV-2 Research

01 Apr 2023  |  frontiersin.org
The article reviews the use of barcoding technology in COVID-19 diagnostics and research. Barcoding, which involves tagging individual DNA or RNA fragments with unique sequences, allows for high-throughput analysis of clinical samples, enhancing the speed and capacity of testing. The review covers 26 articles that have applied barcoding to SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics, highlighting the technology's ability to process tens of thousands of samples simultaneously and its potential integration with various biotechnologies. The article explains the principles of barcoding, its application in identifying SARS-CoV-2 variants, and its role in scaling up diagnostic capacity. It also discusses the potential of barcoding in tracking virus evolution and aiding in the development of antiviral strategies. The author, H-CC, suggests that barcoding can be further used to trace genome alterations in SARS-CoV-2 variants and select drug-resistant variants in vitro. The article emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnostics in controlling the pandemic and proposes solutions to improve current strategies.

Prevalence of Pneumococcal Serotypes in Community-Acquired Pneumonia among Older Adults in Italy: A Multicenter Cohort Study

15 Jan 2023  |  mdpi.com
The article discusses a study on the distribution of pneumococcal serotypes in adults with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Italy, particularly after the introduction of the PCV13 immunization for children. It highlights the low vaccination uptake among at-risk and older adults despite recommendations. The study, conducted between 2017 and 2020 across four Italian regions, found that 13.1% of CAP cases were due to pneumococcus, with serotypes 3, 8, 22F, 11A, and 9N being the most common. The newly licensed PCV20 vaccine covers a greater number of serotypes compared to PCV13 and PCV15. The study also observed an increase in non-vaccine serotypes (NVTs) over the three-year period. The article discusses the implications of these findings for public health and vaccination strategies.

No evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in hospitalized patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome in five Italian hospitals from 1st November 2019 to 29th February 2020

07 Dec 2021  |  journals.plos.org
The article discusses a retrospective observational study conducted in Italy to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in oropharyngeal samples from hospitalized patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) between November 2019 and February 2020. The study aimed to determine the early appearance of the virus in Italy during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The samples were initially tested for influenza and later for SARS-CoV-2. The results showed no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in the samples, suggesting that the virus was not circulating in central and southern Italy before the official first case. The findings support the need for ongoing retrospective studies to understand the epidemiology of COVID-19 and its impact on the healthcare system.
