About Andrea
I'm a British-Italian PhD researcher in Contemporary History and journalist/commentator, covering political and social issues.

In 2018, I completed my BA in Theology and Religion from the University of Oxford, and in 2020 graduated with an MPhil (Master's) in International Relations and Politics at the University of Cambridge. In April 2021, I started my doctoral research on Italian Euroscepticism at the Germanic Historical Institute in Rome, while being registered as a PhD student at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich.

I have written for various publications including TIME magazine, The Independent, The Times, HuffPost, Euronews, Metro.co.uk, and Politics.co.uk on a variety of topics. My driving motivation as a journalist is to give a platform to people whose voices have been ignored, and to call out under-reported injustices around the world.

The Forgotten Persecution of Gay Men During the Holocaust

07 Apr 2023  |  Time
The article discusses the often overlooked persecution of LGBTQ individuals during the Holocaust and the continued marginalization of their stories in post-war society. It highlights the experiences of gay Holocaust survivors like Pierre Seel, who faced torture and witnessed horrific violence, including the murder of his lover. The article outlines how the Nazis targeted homosexual men with Paragraph 175, leading to arrests and deaths in concentration camps. Even after the war, survivors were treated as criminals, and their suffering was largely ignored or suppressed. The article also touches on the oppression of queer women and intersex individuals under the Nazi regime. It wasn't until the 1970s that gay Holocaust victims began to speak out, leading to some recognition and compensation in recent years. However, the author emphasizes the importance of including LGBTQ stories in Holocaust remembrance to prevent the erasure of their experiences.

The government’s settled status scheme isn’t working – and the results will be catastrophic for EU migrants

16 Feb 2019  |  The Independent
The article discusses the difficulties faced by EU citizens in the UK, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, in obtaining settled status post-Brexit. Elly Wright, a Dutch widow living in Surrey, has faced significant stress due to complications with her surnames in the application process. The In Limbo Project highlights similar negative experiences. The government's pilot scheme has been problematic, especially for those with technological challenges. The article criticizes the government for the uncertainty and anxiety caused to EU nationals, drawing parallels with the Windrush scandal and questioning the morality of the current approach. It calls for a guarantee of full rights for European citizens in the UK without the need for a flawed settled status scheme.
