A UNDP expert, Riman Abdul Rahman Saleh, presented a report on Yemen's human development, highlighting the country's low rankings in gender inequality and poverty compared to other Arab nations. The report also noted significant issues such as high illiteracy rates and lack of basic education for children. Additionally, a report presented by Tawfiq Abdel Wahed al-Shargabi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Water and Environment, outlined the critical state of Yemen's water resources, emphasizing the urgency of addressing water scarcity to prevent economic and social instability.
Yemen's Health Crisis: Malnutrition Exceeds Emergency Standards
Yemen's Minister of Health, Ahmed Qasem al-Ansi, highlighted the severe malnutrition crisis in Yemen, with statistics showing that it exceeds international emergency standards. Chronic malnutrition affects 15% of children under five, with some areas like Hodeida reaching 35%. Nearly 967,000 children suffer from acute malnutrition, with 276,000 at risk of death. The Minister emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between international and local health organizations and alignment with the Ministry's health plans to combat this issue. During a meeting with donors and civil organizations, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr. Mohammed al-Sa’di, also stressed the importance of addressing administrative dysfunction and political conflict that have contributed to the crisis.
