Portero, building superintendent or building supervisor, is very common profession in Argentina. Moreover, according to the General Resolution of AFIP, every building that consists of more than 5 apartments, is obliged to have at least one portero . It’s male dominated job, whose responsibilities are to repair and maintain a residential building. The Guild of building supervisors (Sindicato de Porteros) is the strongest in the country - it’s almost impossible to fire them. At the same time they receive a lot of benefits - an apartment in the same building without charge, competitive salary, extra hours, medical and social insurance etc.
